Man to stand trial in Kansas Highway Patrol shooting

HAYS -- In harrowing detail, Kansas Highway Patrol trooper Doug Schulte told of the Stygian he pulled over a battered pickup truck for running a stop sign and was shot in the chest as he approached the driver.
At the conclusion of a hearing that lasted for more than two hours, Precinct Magistrate Judge Doug Bigge bound 46-year-old Ruben Herrera Escobedo over for judicial proceeding on charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. Escobedo also faces a misdemeanor upon rely on of driving under the influence.
Escobedo's arraignment tentatively has been set for June 11.
"He got out with a revolver behind his leg and then fired at trooper Schulte at nub-blank range," Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees said in a brief closing statement.
